Apartments for Rent in Roslindale, MA
The Boston neighborhood of Roslindale, or “Rozzie” and some locals call it, is a residential area with pockets of commercial and industrial space. Hyde Park, Mattapan, West Roxbury, and Jamaica Plain make up its borders. Despite the fact that Google Maps shows Forest Hills as part of Roslindale, it is actually part of Jamaica Plain. It is a mere 6 miles from the heart of Boston and 4 miles from the ocean.
Roslindale was initially a part of Roxbury. However, Roslindale, Jamaica Plain, and West Roxbury separated from the town in 1851. It 1873, the people of Roslindale decided that the city of Boston should annex the area. Originally called South Street Crossing in the 1860’s, the government rejected the name when the neighborhood attempted to get its own postal district. John Pierce, an area resident who traveled frequently and believed the landscape resembled Roslin, Scotland, is responsible for the name Roslindale. He believed the surrounding hills made the crossing appear to be a dale. His idea became the name Roslindale and the official name of the neighborhood after submission to and subsequent approval by the US Postal Service.
Roslindale: Late 1800’s to Today
Post-Civil War Roslindale saw steady economic and population growth due to the construction of the railway. Then in 1887, the Bussey Bridge near the present-day Arnold Arboretum collapsed under a Boston & Providence Railroad train carrying 200 passengers. The five rear cars fell to the ground, one on top of the next. This resulted in 23 fatalities and over 100 people injured. Investigators determined the collapse was due to poor design and faulty welds. Being one of the nation’s first significant rail disasters, Roslindale was a major catalyst for improved design requirements and the beginning of regular government safety inspections of train bridges throughout the country.
This unexpectedly led to another population boom in the area. As people visited the neighborhood to witness the wreckage, they realized it was a beautiful place to live and that it was close to Boston. By the 1920’s, Roslindale grew to the area and layout we see today. Centered on Adams Park, most sections of the neighborhood contain various densities of one, two, and three family residences along tree-lined streets. Other areas contain retail and light industrial facilities.
The 1970 saw the surge in popularity of shopping malls and dense retail centers. Roslindale Square, the neighborhood’s primary business district, greatly benefitted from this trend. It became a notable shopping destination for the people of Boston. At its peak, there was a movie theater, food markets, department stores, showrooms, and restaurants.
